Briefcase Law is an advice, assistance and advocacy service for Small Claims (claims up to £10,000). We help both Claimants and Defendants. We are also able to assist Respondents to Employment Tribunal claims.
The business was set up by a small group of law graduates, who have complete the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) and are therefore trained in dispute resolution, court procedures and advocacy. As individuals with established careers before studying law, we have a wealth of real world knowledge and lots of hands on experience in courts and tribunals.
We believe that ordinary people should have a more accessible way to resolve their disputes.
We are able to provide a targeted, one to one service, aimed at taking much of the stress out of running or defending Small Claims for a much lower price than other legal professionals.
What’s more, given our detailed knowledge of the law and procedures, the work we do can make a significant difference to your chances of success, particularly if your opponent is legally represented.
More information about our legal status and regulation can be found on our Regulation page.
Why we created Briefcase Law
Successive governments have slashed the availability of legal aid to the extent that it is now unavailable for most civil matters. The theory goes that the court process is so simple for small matters, that people can easily represent themselves.
Yet when companies are in the Small Claim Courts, they invariably use solicitors and barristers, even though they are unlikely to get their legal fees back.
In April of 2013 the top limit for Small Claims was doubled from £5,000 to £10,000. Overnight thousands of claims were converted into Small Claims where the winner’s legal bills are NOT paid by the loser. The legal costs could be more than the money at stake!
We believe that there is a better approach. You have conduct of your own case, but with us drafting, guiding, advising and assisting you all the way. We can represent you in court, if it comes to it.
